Now that you've learned the minus sign, it's time to learn what happens when you add a plus sign. "A function is an expression that assigns a value to a variable." It's really easy to understand what functions do! What they do is allow us to make calculations with numbers and variables using little bits of math called "formulas." After we learn how functions work, we'll go through a bunch of commonly used formulas for making calculations. This post will focus on the addition operator (+) and the multiplication operator (*). These are the most common operators used, but there are many others which you will learn about if you keep reading. In order to use a function, we have to have a "function symbol" to work with. If we take a look at the addition operator (+), we can understand it as a small box containing 4 different smaller boxes inside, each of which has a value inside of it which represents one of the variables being worked with. These variables are called "parameters" or "arguments." The word to the right of the parameters is called the "argument;" in this case, it's just a variable called x. We can think about these little boxes like coordinates on a map. The x-coordinate is the first parameter (the one to the left) and the y-coordinate is the second parameter (the one to the right). Each little box has a value inside of it. The first little box on top has a + sign inside of it, so it is acting like an addition sign. The second little box on top has a * sign inside of it, so it's acting like a multiplication operator. So what does this operator do? It takes two arguments and adds them together! Remember that there are two things that can happen when you add numbers. This means that it could give us an answer of either +5 or +15, depending on how many arguments we include with the function. Here's an example of how this would work: Here's another example of what the addition function looks like: Notice that the first (x, y) coordinate is (3, 100), and the second coordinate (w, h) is (1, 100). This is where we'll start to see formulas come in handy! So now that we've learned about functions and functions symbols. Let's learn some formulas for performing calculations. As I mentioned before, there are many different formulas which you can use for performing calculations. In the future, I'll be working on a post which will take a look at these other formulas. These are the three formulas that we're going to learn in this post: + The addition formula = The equality operator Now that you've learned these three formulas, it's time to learn what happens when you combine them! As I mentioned before, there are two things that can happen when two numbers get added together. The first thing is called "addition," and the other thing is called "division." Addition is very simple: you add the number from 1 to whatever number you're adding. In this example =(3 + 4) = 7. eccc085e13
